Heteronormativity. BIBLIOGRAPHY. Coined in 1991 by Michael Warner, a social critic, the term heteronormativity refers to pervasive and invisible norms of heterosexuality (sexual desire exclusively for the opposite sex) embedded as a normative principle in social institutions and theory; those who fall outside this standard are devalued. Heteronormativity, or to be heteronormative, by definition is “of, relating to, or based on the attitude that heterosexuality is the only normal and natural expression of sexuality.” ( Merriam-Webster ) Normal is defined as “conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected” or “the usual, average, or typical state or condition.” A heteronormative statement or policy assumes that people can be easily categorized into binary — male and female — genders. It also assumes that individuals only seek out romantic and sexual relationships with the opposite sex. Heterosexuality is often assumed in the way that the English language is currently used.

Heteronormativity is what makes heterosexuality seem coherent, natural and privileged.

LGBTIQ+: The  Heteronormativity, predicated on the gender binary, is the belief that being heterosexual (which is attraction only to a different gender) is the only normal and natural sexual orientation. Heteronormativity is the belief that heterosexuality is the default, preferred, or normal mode of sexual orientation. It assumes the gender binary (i.e., that there are only two distinct, opposite genders ) and that sexual and marital relations are most fitting between people of opposite sex. In its broadest sense, heteronormativity implies that there is a hard and fast line between genders. Men are men, and women are women. It's all black and white, allowing for no gray areas in between. This leads to the conclusion that heterosexuality is, therefore, the norm, but more importantly, that it is the only norm.
